Cleanings (Prophy) at Streitz Dental

Professional cleanings are completed by one of our dental hygienists or one of the doctors. In the absence of gum disease, a regular cleaning includes the removal of harmful plaque and calculus (tarter) that can damage teeth and gums. Cleanings also include the removal of superficial staining that regular brushing and flossing cannot remove. We will usually use a combination of instruments that are gentle on your teeth and gums but work well in removing plaque and tarter. An ultrasonic cleaning tool that vibrates very quickly while spraying a fine mist of water is used to break up larger tarter and plaque deposits quickly and efficiently. Scalers and curettes are also used on all tooth surfaces to remove plaque from harder to clean areas.  The last tool used is a professional polishing system that removes the majority of surface stains caused by coffee, wine, and smoking.
