Periodontal treatment involves treating the supporting structures of your teeth, which include the bone and periodontium (gums). This treatment usually involves non-surgical techniques including scaling and root planing, which is removing calculus (tartar) from the roots often below the gum tissue. This type of treatment is sometimes referred to as a ‘deep cleaning.’

Additional treatment such as antimicrobial therapy or surgical procedures may be necessary after initial treatment depending on the patient’s needs. Most times, the initial therapy of scaling and root planing followed by regular maintenance therapy is sufficient in maintaining good periodontal health.
